Royal Dutch Mint wins best Sustainability Initiative Award at MDC 2023

Ottawa, 18th October 2023

The Royal Dutch Mint has won the award for Best Sustainability Initiative during the MDC (Mint Directors Conference) in Ottawa, Canada, for their building: The Dutch Vault. The new Dutch Vault in Houten, which went into operation in 2020, is the first energy-neutral mint in the industry. Several sustainability measures have been taken to drastically decrease the waste.

Sustainability during core business and daily processes

For the building, sustainability was designed not just for the building itself, but also for operations and daily processes. Royal Dutch Mint took the opportunity to do better in water treatment, waste recycling and organizing for a low carbon footprint.

To achieve a low carbon footprint,  various measures have been taken. Such as reducing the use of chemicals, capturing rain water and using it to flush lavatories and water the gardens, the use of LED lightning, timers on powerplugs and advanced heating, ventilation and air conditioning. As a result, The Royal Dutch Mint is self-sufficient in energy and has reduced its waste drastically, as its now on a gas free site with on-site solar energy production that is expected to exceed its own consumption.

MDC Awards

The MDC Awards took place from 15 till 18th of October in Ottawa: it’s the place where mint directors, suppliers, retailers and other stakeholders come together to exchange information and debate the development in future of coins.
